Hypothesis 1: Andrea Amati, the “pins” and the central soundpost
Some few years ago, colleagues[47] drew my attention to an unexplained hole observable in every violin by Andrea Amati. This hole, of a variable size from about 1 mm to 2.5 mm, is situated in the inside part of the back, on its longitudinal axis, at the height of the upper part of the soundholes (figure 13). This hole, often filled up with glue is not cylindrical but slightly conical (figure 14). It is as deep as the thickness of the back and sometimes goes through the back to be visible from outside as in the later “Conte Vitale” violin (figure 15). We had many discussions together, trying to find some technical explanation for the presence of such a mysterious feature we called a “pin”, making various hypotheses but without arriving at really convincing solutions.

En référence aux techniques des ébénistes de l'époque : « N'ayant que peu d'étau ou de presse, ils travaillaient en butée » , précise le jeune chercheur. En faire une question de pratique, l'hypothèse Poulain tient de la pure logique. « Au XVIIIe siècle, le luthier n'était pas un artiste mais un ouvrier dans de gros atelier et les outils étaient difficiles à acquérir. »

Tu as besoin de vérifier mes dires!
Même si le central pin n´existe pas chez Strad, cela ne veut pas dire qu´il n´utilisait pas la technique décrite par Yann, il pouvait laisser plus de bois pour faire disparaitre le trou. Soigneux comme il était, c´est plausible. Pour ma part je travaille maintenant de cette manière et c´est très pratique.

La première chose, si tu t´intéresses à ce point à la lutherie serait peut-être de t´abonner à cette revue?

La deuxième chose étant de solliciter un stage chez Christian cet été.
