Reality Checkhey there...i have recently purchased an older violin that seems to have "integral" linings left after carving out/thicknessing the inner rib material...has any one ever heard of or seen such a thing ??? the grain lines match perfectly and the "linings" although smaller than average seem to be from the same piece of wood...these "linings" are both at the top and bottom of the ribs...
i have attached 3 photos...it is hard to get the detail i wanted, but the linings are definitely part of the rib material...is this typical of any makers or is this just an oddity...also a shot of the through neck...cheers...
hello there...
so nobody has any thoughts even ??? i wasn't looking for a definite answer, just curious if anybody had ever seen such work...it seems counter intuitive as the bending of the ribs would be much more difficult with this extra thickness at the top and bottom, not to mention the fact that you couldn't get the majority of the rib to touch a bending iron...at any rate...just thought i would share this oddity to see what information it might provide...i am always interested in finding out new bits of information about instruments...
all the best...
